Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery

This minitrack primarily covers the methodological issues related to data mining, inductive learning, knowledge acquisition, knowledge discovery, and inductive decision making applications. Expert decisions, environmental/normative datasets, and Internet database are considered in discovering information and knowledge. The theoretical exploration in the previous year directs us that the methodological aspects applied to business and management applications have to be further visited and expanded, in addition. Also, major data mining research programs from both academic and industry groups are considered in addressing the real world problems.

Comprehensibility of data mining techniques, data visualization, task and model interaction, data quality assessment, scalability, human factors and modeling, performance measurement and validation, acquisition of qualitative knowledge, feature selection, and cost and economics of decisions are some of the topics being sought. However, the topical areas will not limited to the above. Relevant software and applications issues will also be considered.

GIS and Decision Support

The primary objective of this Minitrack is to investigate the interface between GIS technology and management decision making. The goal of DSS in general is to deploy computing technology to significantly improve the quality of critical strategic and tactical decisions. GIS technology provides ample opportunities for extending the scope and effectiveness of decision support for the many real-world management problems with an explicit spatial-temporal context.

A secondary objective of this Minitrack is to promote interdisciplinary interest between the MIS and GIS research communities. MIS researchers are just beginning to realize the extent to which GIS can enhance traditional information systems whereas GIS researchers have been trying for years, with limited success, to bring attention to the unique spatial aspects of many traditional management problems. This forum presents a window for a rich exchange of perspectives.

Authors are invited to submit papers on topics involving the application of GIS and spatial analysis to decision support including, but not limited to:

Information Modeling Methodologies in the Visual Programming and Internet Era

Internet and electronic commerce are two of the most profound events this century. With cyber-sales expecting to double every year, web-based applications are receiving much attention lately. Developing web-based applications, though critical to the long-term competitiveness of most organizations, are hindered by the lack of modeling methods and methodologies engineered to support web-based applications. This, coupled with the advancement in visual programming and the popularity of visual programming in applications development, represents a new era for information modeling methods and methodologies.

The minitrack focuses on the modeling methods and methodologies in the visual programming and Internet era. This minitrack aims at being a premier presentation forum for the latest ideas and results in the area of modeling techniques. We seek research papers, case studies and practitioner reports relating to modeling methods and methodologies. Of special interest are conceptual and empirical papers analyzing the fit of methods such UML and object-orientated approaches to web-based applications. Also of interest are extensions to the textbook methods to cover the unique requirements of web-based applications.

Relevant topics for this minitrack include (but not limited to)

(i) Modeling methods and methodologies for Web database

(ii) Reports on evaluating different modeling methods and methodologies

Intelligent Systems and Active DSS

Papers are invited for the minitrack on Intelligent Systems and Active DSS as part of the Modeling Technologies and Intelligent Systems Track at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS).

Intelligent systems and active decision support systems are part of the movement towards developing effective intelligent systems for problem solving and decision making, systems that can deal with complex and ill-structured situations, i.e. contexts for which discovery and learning can positively impact the outcome of the problem solving process. Intelligent systems are also a part of the emerging paradigm for Active DSS, within which we want to develop and implement more effective and productive support systems, both for individual users as well as for groups of users.

This gradual paradigm shift has been triggered by several factors:

The aim of the minitrack on Intelligent Systems and Active DSS is fourfold:

1. to summarize past research in this area and draw lessons from it;
2. to explore the possibility of developing a new generation of intelligent systems;
3. to suggest an enhanced methodology for using support technology in problem solving and decision making, and
4. to devise implementation approaches for an effective use of the new support technology in organizations

The purpose of HICSS is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas, research results, development activities, and applications among researchers and practitioners in computer-based systems sciences. The conference consists of tutorials, advanced seminars, presentations of accepted papers, open forum, task forces, and plenary and distinguished guest lectures. There is a high degree of interaction and discussion among the conference participants because the conference is conducted in a workshop-like setting.

The Intelligent Systems and Active DSS minitrack is part of the Modeling Technologies Track. There are several minitracks that focus on a variety of research topics in this track. For more information contact:

Logic Modeling

Research in the logic modeling minitrack at HICSS has brought together researchers in disciplines such as management science, information systems, artificial intelligence, philosophy, cognitive science, and mathematical logic. Issues of interest in this minitrack include the use of innovative logics to model and solve problems in information systems and management science, fundamental research issues in representation and reasoning in logic and artificial intelligence, defeasible (or nonmonotonic) reasoning, reasoning with incomplete information, and techniques for the solution of logical inference problems.

Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems

Papers are invited for the minitrack on Soft Computing as part of the Modeling Technologies and Intelligent Systems Track at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS).

The aim of the Soft Computing minitrack is fourfold: (i) to summarize past research work in this area and draw lessons from it; (ii) to explore the possibilities of developing a new, effective paradigm for modeling, problem solving and decision making; (iii) to study enhanced methodologies for incorporating new modeling theory in support systems, and (iv) to develop more productive implementation methods for an effective use of support technology in organizations.

The next generation of modeling tools and support systems will include (but is not limited to) the following:

for interactive planning, problem solving and decision making, by individuals or by groups of users. The resulting models will probably be more robust, more adaptive and easier to use than conventional modeling tools. The models will probably be more easily incorporated in support systems. The expected end result is a generation of support systems which provide the users with knowledge-based support which is adapted both to the problems they need to solve and the decision making expected of them and, furthermore, to the internal logic of the context in which they will have to carry out their activities.

The purpose of HICSS is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas, research results, development activities, and applications among researchers and practitioners in computer-based systems sciences. The conference consists of tutorials, advanced seminars, presentations of accepted papers, open forum, tasks forces, and plenary and distinguished guest lectures. There is a high degree of interaction and discussion among the conference participants because the conference is conducted in a workshop-like setting.
