Track: Information Technology in Health Care
Minitrack:
Healthcare Systems Off the Ward

There is an ongoing and accelerating move to provide medical healthcare outside of traditional healthcare settings, both for reasons of financial expediency (reducing visits to hospital and primary care physicians and earlier discharge) and improving patients' quality of life. One of the most radical shifts that has happened can be seen in the deployment of small, mobile medical devices in the home, and that can be operated by users and home-based carers, although with variations in the extent of device and therapeutic management across users and medical practitioners. Some of these involve complex data interpretation and physical placement which makes their design and organisational deployment particularly interesting and problematic. This move away from the hospital as a site for operating medical technology has a huge number of implications around how best to achieve this radical change to the use of medical devices, ranging from the design of device interfaces to the training of users to make effective use of the technology.

Topics and research areas include, but are not limited to:
* Mobile healthcare devices: Interaction design, Context of use, Data representation design issues, Accommodating the diversity of users and their specific needs
* Organisational issues related to home-based healthcare: Issues ranging from user needs, training to information management
* Stakeholders and service design
