Knowledge Evolution: Methods and Measures for
Organizational Learning
Knowledge evolution is a situation where existing knowledge
transcends from one state to another. This can be among other
reasons, due to, input of new knowledge, modification of existing
knowledge and reclassification of data items related to a domain
of knowledge. For example, Pluto was first discovered on February
18th, 1930 by Clyde W.Tombaugh. If a time stamp was added to the
knowledge that existed then and if no other knowledge was
discovered since then, we could safely say that the knowledgebase
(KB) we would have had would be only of one version. When new
discoveries are made, for example on the 24th of August, 2006 that
Pluto is no longer a Planet, our knowledge would have then now
transcended to a new state. In other words if a time stamp was
added to our earlier knowledgebase (KB), then our new
knowledgebase (KB) would be labeled as KB2 as in knowledgebase
(KB) version 2.
The maintenance of such evolution is critical and what is more
important is to be able to track the lineage of that evolution.
Knowledge is typically an evolving phenomenon and is dynamic
entity. Thus this track would expand on existing knowledge
management (KM) efforts and more importantly to introduce a
systematic method, methodology, measure and know-how of managing
knowledge evolution in the context of organizational learning.
