Track: Software Technology
Minitrack:
Distributed Systems for Ubiquitous Computing

Computers of all shapes, sizes, power and functionality are ubiquitous. This ubiquity is an unstoppable market force placing computation in nearly every aspect of our lives, and more and more of these systems have Internet connectivity. We are standing on a threshold that, when crossed, will leave each of us at least virtually always connected to Internet services, be it our set top box or satellite receiver downloading videos; the alarm systems in our homes sending alerts and streaming video to our preferred hand-held device; or an RFID scanner reading our passports and comparing the read data to a global data base. The rapid deployment of ubiquitous systems will surely outpace the efforts of the research community’s careful examination of its foundations, and the issues it raises among which is the “Pandora’s Box” of personal security. This minitrack will be open to exploring both the research and deployment aspects of this technology.

Each of the following technical areas as they relate to “Distributed Systems for Ubiquitous Computing” are among the topics that will be covered in this minitrack:

  •  Personal security;

  • Identity and single-sign-on;

  • Platforms for the deployment of ubiquitous Internet services;

  • Peer-to-peer protocols, decentralized large scale distributed systems, and overlay networks;

  • User Interfaces and ease-of-use;

  • Quality of Service;

  • Quality Assurance of large, distributed systems;

  • Any-Device-to-Any-Device communication;

  • Presence and availability; and geo-localization.
